Tuesday 28th February:
I went back down to Rinsey this afternoon but went later than yesterday to catch the sunset. When I arrived it was a surprise to see that a big swell had got up overnight. I had planned to shoot Wheal Prosper with the sunset behind but a quick change of plan saw me don my wellies and scramble down onto the beach. An hour and a half before sunset the light was really bright and harsh but as we got closer to the six o'clock sunset the waves, rocks and spray were backlit with oranges and reds. One bodyboarder arrived on the beach at the same time as me and added a bit of extra interest. Again it was really warm on the beach out of the wind and there were several people lying on the sand gathering some vitamin D after the darker months.

Monday 27th February:
A few miles further east today, looking back at the other side of a distant Cudden Point from Rinsey. Once again we were out of the wind and it was like a summer's day. Quite a few people out walking the coast path and lots of blackcaps, pippits and choughs out feeling Spring in the air. We just need to get rid of this easterly wind and I think we really have turned the corner. No sign of the cliff ponies but plenty of evidence that they were here recently.

Sunday 26th February:
Wall to wall sunshine today but spoilt by a bitter north easterly wind. To get out of it we went down to Perranuthnoe this afternoon where it was like a summer's day as it was so sheltered on the beach and rocks. The car park was full with lots of families out making the most of the weather. Both cafes doing a roaring trade so early in the season. Stopped at Crowlas on the way home for a pint of real ale.

Saturday 25th February:
A cold dawn photo walk along the seafront to the harbour and back. Despite the cold dozens of swimmers out and about including one extremely brave lady diving off the promenade and not a wetsuit in sight. Lots of small boats out in the bay so there must be plenty of mackerel about-must be chilly on the hands out there.

Friday 24th February:
A cold, windy and grey afternoon saw us on a photo walk along the eastern bank of Hayle Estuary. The building work here is continuing apace with flats and houses appearing in all directions. Hayle really is an up and coming town and the schools and businesses must be reaping the benefit. I listen to a podcast called "Photowalk" where Neale James goes on a walk, talking photography and taking what he calls "Sketchbook Images" so below are my sketchbook images of a February hour in a very chilly north easterly wind.

Thursday 23rd February:
Another grey day with a lot of rain around in the morning and on top of that a really strong and cold north easterly wind. Mid afternoon we went over to Marazion where we would be out of the wind and to see the beach with the huge spring tides. When we got there you could walk to the Mount through the harbour entrance, something that doesn't happen very often. After spending some time at the harbour mouth and on the causeway we went into the town back streets where I like to look for compositions over the rooftops. Quite surprised at how many shops and cafes were closed as it's half term up country and there were a lot of families about.

Wednesday 22nd February:
A really strong and cold north westerly wind today so I decided to stay local and stay out of the wind by walking along Larigan Beach to Newlyn Bridge at low tide. The tide was out as far as you will see it with sand and rocks normally never accessible. There was a group of official looking people out surveying an area of rock while they had the chance. Sometimes you get to see remnants of the ancient forest but all the tree trunks are buried at the moment. By the time I made my way back the tide was rushing in.

Monday 20th February:
Still no sign of the sun but only a grey sky and drizzle in the air. The tides at the moment are very big springs and to take advantage of this I went down to the harbour at low tide and was able to get right out into the mouth. I could actually walk behind the Albert Pier in my wellies and right up nearly to the dock gates. Certainly some of the images I got will only be obtainable a few times a year. Three prime lenses used today-16mm, 35mm and 50mm.

Sunday 19th February:
A two minute walk down the road for sunrise. The forecast said clear skies but it was anything but. Just a narrow gap in the clouds on the horizon and so the sunrise lasted for about as long as it took me to walk down there. The images were taken using the Fuji Classic Chrome film simulation and still using the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 prime lens.

Friday 17th February:
Another grey, dark and drizzly day saw us down at Sennen Harbour. A few days ago the beach was very busy but this afternoon the beach and harbour area were much quieter. We spent an hour around the harbour and then had a bit of exercise and walked up to the old coastguard lookout. We were the only ones up there, quite breezy on the top with a misty view towards Lands End. Still working with a 16mm prime lens and using the Fuji Acros film simulation.

Thursday 16th February:
A grey day in Penzance but up at Cape Cornwall in the afternoon it was thick fog with the Brisons completely lost from sight. The sun was a feint ball out to sea and the effect was to make it feel like a moonlit night. The car park was almost empty just two other older couples like us down in Priests Cove. Despite being dark and damp it was really warm for the time of year. All images are Fuji Acros +yellow filter Jpegs and taken with a 16mm F/1.4 Fuji prime lens, no tripod, all handheld.

Wednesday 15th February:
I set off from home in the afternoon heading for the north coast but by a series of last minute left or right decisions I ended up at Praa Sands on the south coast. Compared to Sennen yesterday, the beach was really quiet with just a few dog walkers and one family bodyboarding. There was no wind and the sun was out for the first part of my visit but gradually the light became very hazy and the sunset never really came to anything. It's been a good weather week for those on holiday and really mild for mid February.

A little bit of creativity
Tuesday 14th February:
A Valentine's Day photo walk along Sennen Beach on a sunny, busy half term afternoon. One young couple making heart shaped shadows and then he attempted many times to take photos of his partner leaping in the air with Cape Cornwall behind. They were oblivious to the crowded beach and the people watching their leaping and jumping. Lots of surfers, young and old, enjoying the sunshine and a good surf. Definitely romance and Spring in the air-it will probably snow next week.

Monday 13th February:
After staying in waiting for the engineers to turn the gas back on after finishing digging up our street in the afternoon I went down to the harbour at low tide. Every now and then a splash of sunshine hit the boats and on the way back along the seafront we had a few minutes where so called God Rays found there way through gaps in the clouds. There's a feeling of spring in the air but the wind is still a bit chilly. Should be able to get a bit further afield later this week.

A bit of winter colour and a splash of sun
Sunday 12th February:
Grey and breezy down on the seafront this morning. The strong chilly south easterly was blowing the spray over the promenade and catching out a few joggers and dog walkers. Only a hint of colour in the sky as the sun rose but the light was largely snuffed out by a bank of cloud.

Friday 10th February:
After 10 days of illness I'm back in action - but only just about! It seems millions of people are suffering from various winter bugs, I think it's partly the bugs are getting more viscous and partly because I'm getting older.
A simple photo walk this afternoon along Larigan Beach to Newlyn, going as far as the sea defence blocks that featured on the television last week. The blocks are designed to be environmentally friendly with lots of holes and texture for sea creatures and weed to live in and on. It was a grey drizzly afternoon with no sign of light but at least little or no wind.

February 1st 2023:
Things are getting worse! Bad back, tennis elbow and now I've got a cold! Rather than staying in feeling sorry for myself I had a quick photo walk mid afternoon. Not too far- starting at the bus station, along the Albert Pier, around the harbour and back along the seafront. All images on a Fuji X-E1 with a 50mm prime lens.
