Monday 31st July: Yet another wet day with heavier rain in the morning, turning to drizzle and mist in the afternoon. After lunch I drove down to Porthleven to chat with ex-teaching colleague Lucie Averill who this week has a photographic exhibition in the Old Lifeboat Station Gallery. It's there until 4pm on Friday August 4th if you are in the area. It was grey and misty in Porthleven but enough sea coming into the harbour to wash over the rocks just outside the gallery. I climbed over the railings and spent half an hour or more making the images below. The jagged rocks here make a good subject for the foreground and for the wider images the people getting splashed on the pier made a good background. |
Sunday 30th:
Is it July or November? We went up to Kenidjack this afternoon and then down the valley to the sea. It was dark and grey and really did feel like autumn. Now I'm not complaining, as for photography, this is better than clear blue skies. I really feel sorry for families hoping to spend a week on the beach and probably now wishing they'd gone to somewhere warmer-but not quite as warm as the Mediterranean.
The tide was just starting to go out, there were some good waves coming into the bay and rushing over the rocks. Mostly black and white but a little colour especially for the fascinating huge boulder that looks totally out of place.

Saturday Early Evening:
With big clouds and bursts of sunshine I decided it was perfect for my infrared camera. We drove up to Trewellard and then down towards Levant. On the way down I spent some time at higher Bal Mine that sits high up in the landscape and means you can get plenty of sky in the images. I waited for patches of sunlight to light up the foliage which I love the look of in black and white. We then went down to the cliffs and Levant Mine workings, an area I never tire of.

Saturday 29th July:
A colourful sunrise promise made me get up early yet again and make my along the seafront and out behind the railway station. Here I got wet as the sunrise coincided with a heavy shower. The rain diffused the sunrise light and cast an orange glow across Mounts Bay. It was black above me and there was a rainbow behind and all the time I was getting wetter. A little later, walking back past the harbour, I was able to capture the Scillonian leaving on the first of it's high season Saturday sailings. Just to wrap up a pleasing morning there was another burst of light as the sun found a gap in the clouds.

Another photowalk-no wonder I'm tired.

Friday 28th July:
The Met Office forecast on my phone said there may be a colourful sunrise and so, full of expectation, I was down on the beach near Marazion at 5.30am. Not a sign of the sun, just grey skies and drizzle, so it was Plan B again-black and white.

Thursday 27th July:
Another wet morning but slightly drier in the afternoon. After driving around, mostly waiting for the drizzle to stop, we ended up at Portheras Beach. As we got onto the nearly empty beach the sun came out for a few minutes but out on the horizon it was dark and more rain was obviously not far away. The clouds were a dark purple with a little sun creeping through to our left. As the drizzle arrived we made our way back to the car and paid a quick visit to Pendeen Lighthouse where the view towards Levant was closing in rapidly.

Wednesday 26th July;
Wet all day but mid afternoon it turned more to Cornish mizzle for a while so I made a quick dash up to Cape Cornwall. All black and white as there wasn't a hint of colour in the sea or sky. I was treated to a bit of a cabaret while drinking my tea back at Little Wonder Cafe. There is an image below but if you can get on my instagram you can hear them in action- Waterloo by Abba. If you have ever been to Cape Cornwall in the daytime you will have been greeted by the wonderful National Trust lady pictured on the right.

Tuesday 25th July:
An evening trip to Gwynver Beach with beautiful hazy sunshine and a gentle surf rolling in. The light had a blue tinge to it and not too harsh. As we were walking down the endless steps to the beach there was a constant stream of people coming up. The car park had been full earlier but families were on their way back to the campsites, probably for a BBQ. Still plenty on the beach but we made our way through the rocks to the right and there it was empty. Bit of a mixed bag of images below but so much to photograph in all directions.

Monday 24th July:
A drizzly morning gave way to sunshine by mid afternoon. With a northerly breeze blowing we headed down towards Porthcurno to seek a sheltered spot. Porthcurno itself was bound to be busy so we parked at Treen and walked down the lane to the cliffs overlooking Pedn Vounder. Rather than put my tripod where everyone else does I walked further along the path and scrambled down nearly to sea level. No path, just finding my way as best I could. Blue skies and blue seas-a chocolate box summer scene.

Sunday Afternoon:
Same infrared camera but up to Carn Galver and then out to Bosigran Headland. A large group of wild ponies when we arrived and they always make for an image or two. I loved the one I've posted with the pony peeping around the wall.
The dramatic clouds helped with the infrared this afternoon and the lush green foliage really stands out.

Sunday 23rd July:
After a day of non stop rain, this morning was a little bit better. I went for a walk with an infrared Fuji camera to document the comings and goings around Penzance. It was dry for the first part of my walk but down on the seafront the drizzle spread in. One minute people were all sitting at the tables in front of Pickle the caravan cafe and the next they were all rushing for shelter-quite entertaining.

Friday 21st July:
One of my favourite photo walks this afternoon, down to Lands End and a bit of people watching. The summer season really kicks off this weekend and even today it was pretty busy. The weather was a bit overcast but nothing like the heavy rain and strong winds forecast for tomorrow. I really ought to do a return visit in the rain as umbrellas and plastic ponchos are always good for a photo especially in a strong wind.
Several coach loads of visitors arrived and a lot of them were German, they split into groups and each had a tour guide with a numbered lollipop stick.

Thursday 20th July:
A warm blue sky day with a flat calm sea. Early afternoon we drove up to Cape Cornwall and walked down into Priests Cove where all the local fishing boats were pulled on the slipway. I went out on the rocks to the left of the slip to begin with and then came back amongst the boats. I had intended to shoot all black and white because it was so bright but in the end I also shot some colour. It was really hot down on the slip and so we only stayed a short while-roll on the wind and rain on Saturday.

Wednesday 19th July:
An evening trip up to Nanjulian, a rocky cove down below St Just Airfield. From where yo park down to the sea is a beautiful short walk and once out of the valley there are far reaching views along to Cape Cornwall to the east and Lands end to the west. Cloudy at first but as the evening went on the clouds largely cleared and the sun lit up the boulders and cliffs. The heather on the cliffs is just coming into bloom so the next few weeks will see me searching out some colourful photographic opportunities. A bit of a blow forecast for the weekend so that should bring the sea up as well.

Tuesday 18th July:
An evening trip up to Porth Nanven, famous for its round boulders beach. A strong swell running but to begin with no sun, in fact we had a little bit of rain. One of my images below is in black and white and that was during the rain.
The tide was high and so setting up on the boulders was difficult but a burst of light on the water made all the difference. On the way home we popped down to Cape Cornwall and I took one image from the road itself, I like the old battered gate.

Monday 17th July:
An afternoon trip down to Land's End on a bright harsh light day. Probably should wait until later in the evening really-golden hour and sunset. The trouble is sunset is still late in the evening and I'm not good at sitting around all day waiting. Gradually the nights are closing in, roll on the autumn.
To make things a little different I stepped over the Beware Dangerous Cliffs sign and made my way down under the First and Last House. From here you get a very different view to the one most Land's End images show. Back at the top I couldn't resist a couple of people shots, always entertaining.

Sunday 16th July:
Up at 4.30am and out by 5 o'clock hoping for a spectacular sunrise but any plans were quickly ditched as the sky was grey and almost 100% cloud. Plan B saw me making for the far end of Larigan Beach which takes you almost into Newlyn. Plan B meant black and white long exposures which I would like to do more of in the future. Shutter speeds are from 1 second to 2 minutes. All images on Fujifilm X-T3 and 18-55mm lens

Saturday 15th July:
More rain this morning but by afternoon there was some blue sky. The westerly wind was even stronger than yesterday and up at Botallack there was a good swell. we didn't climb down to the Crowns Engine Houses but stayed up on the rough track that leads from Botallack to Kenidjack. From here you have good compositions using other engine houses to add to the scene, it's just a little bit different. With a long lens you can zoom right into the Crowns and it gives you a different angle.

A morning of heavy but welcome rain was followed by clearing skies and even a short spell of sunshine. Down at Lands End there was a brisk westerly wind but still quite warm. A few coach loads of visitors arriving and luckily the visibility clearing just in time for them.

Thursday Afternoon:
A very enjoyable couple of hours down on Portheras Beach this afternoon. No sun and a blue tinge to the sky but really warm out of the wind. To ring the changes I just concentrated on the movement in the waves trying different shutter speeds and even a bit of creative photography with ICM (intentional camera movement).

Once the rain had passed we had a walk down to the promenade for coffee this morning. It turned out to be an interesting half hour as we chatted with Carol, Neil, Richard and Helen, friends who are over from New Zealand and Australia for a bit of a European tour. They are down in Cornwall for their last five days and finding the cooler temperatures a relief from the heat wave of France.

Wednesday 12th July:
Not a lot of sunshine today and quite a few showers. Mid afternoon we drove up to Botallack and then down the cliffs almost to sea level. Completely out of the wind here with some small breaks in the clouds to begin with but gradually getting greyer and darker and finally a spell of rain. Luckily there is a good spot to shelter just above our grass ledge and so we waited it out there. As it got darker I switched to black and white and longer exposures. On the way back to the car I stopped and used the ruined archway to make an image of a mystery figure staring out to sea.
Back at the car park we met a family and friends group who had been down by the engine houses drinking brandy and having a sing accompanied by one of the group on his guitar. Not a rave but remembering the life of a relative whose ashes were scattered there. A great place for your ashes I reckon.

Tuesday 11th July:
A couple of hours this afternoon down on the rocks just east of Rinsey Beach. The breeze was quite fresh but with the sun out it was really warm. The wind had whipped up enough swell to provide some interest in the foreground and the headland was being lit by the sun in between periods when some lovely clouds rolled past. A couple on the beach, oblivious to my presence, chasing each other in and out of the water-happy days.

Monday Midday:
With a drier spell forecast for the middle of the day we made some lunch and headed off down to Godrevy. The sea was quite calm and a strong wind was blowing across the bay from St Ives. We walked a mile or so east of the lighthouse and had an hour making some long exposures. A young man walked past me and sat on the edge of the cliffs so I thought I'd better take a photograph in case he was about to jump!

Monday 10th July:
A grey and windy morning with heavy rain on the way. I went for a walk as the first raindrops were falling but I guessed I was going to be stuck in for the rest of the morning so wanted to get out at least for the exercise. I took two images, one I've left in colour for the flags and the second edited in black and white.

Sunday 9th July:
An afternoon trip up to Levant. Really warm there out of most of the breeze and conditions a bit too nice for photography really. A little movement in the sea to help but black and white seemed the best way to go. There's also one image below that I took this morning down on the promenade. The flags were looking good in the wind with a lovely blue sky behind.

Saturday Early Evening:
Down on Praa Sands Beach it was beautiful. The southerly wind had brought up a swell that was hitting the golden rocks and cliffs. The beach was surprisingly empty but as schools begin to break up the crowds will soon arrive.

Very colourful scenes on Penzance Promenade today as a Gay Pride Event took place. Beautiful warm weather to go with it but just enough breeze to keep you cool.

Friday 7th July:
Up and out at 5am for a sunrise wander to the harbour and back. The sun was delayed by a bank of fog on the horizon but then I had a spell of orange light before the sun disappeared into a higher bank of haze.
St Michael's Mount was barely visible.

Thursday 6th July:
A blue sky and flat calm sea day. A brisk southerly wind that seemed impossible to get out of as it gusted around the headlands even on the north coast. Just a few images this afternoon from up on Trevean Cliffs, about a mile east of Morvah village. The colour of the sea was beautiful with small white horses being whipped up by the strong breeze.

Wednesday Midday:
Most photographers would avoid making images in the midday sun but I hate being stuck indoors-I just fall asleep!
We made sandwiches, put the Jetboil in the car and drove up to Porth Nanven. It was a low spring tide and for the first half hour, beautiful sunshine. I spent an hour on the beach, went up to the car for lunch and then spent an hour on the rocks around the corner east of the beach. For the rest of the time we were there it was grey but still a lovely spot for lunch.

Another peaceful wander along the seafront. Early morning rain had freshened the world up and the promenade is now looking a lot cleaner after a lot of rain over the last couple of days.

Tuesday Evening:
Six images of the same thing from Boat Cove at Pendeen. I had gone down there to make some images of the two boats and old buildings but then I spotted this rusty old ring in the rocks. It just appealed to me as the high tide washed around it-kind of felt sorry for it!

Tuesday 4th July:
We stopped in Porthleven on our way home today from going to see a photographic exhibition today. When I spotted this couple over on the pier in the rain I was pleased that I had a camera with me. I like the cloud looming over them like some kind of monster.

Monday Afternoon:
It was dark and cloudy when I left Penzance heading for Levant mine workings on the north coast. When I arrived it was distinctly chilly in the fresh breeze, so I put my coat on and even thought about a winter hat. I walked right down through the workings and out along the coast path until I was above the reef-shown on maps as the Avarack.
For the time of year there was a big sea running as I clambered down the rocks. There used to be a full set of steps, built by miners, that took you all the way to the bottom. These are mostly broken now and you have to make your way down the sloping black rocks so never go down here in wet weather, it's like walking on ice.
From the Avarack you can look west towards Levant or east towards Pendeen lighthouse, today I did both. I also discovered, on top of the reef a large rockpool that the sea hadn't reached for a long time during the calm dry June. Half the water had evaporated leaving a striking white rim all around the edges, I've included some images of this below.

Sunday Evening:
Three sessions in one day-no wonder I'm tired-should be home with my slippers on. We went up to Pendeen Lighthouse and then along the coastal footpath and finally down a hidden overgrown path to the rocks. It was dull at first but there is a good swell running and here the white water contrasts beautifully with the black and orange rocks. After half an hour the sun popped out for a good twenty minutes, so it was a case of grabbing as many images as possible before a huge black cloud rolled in.

Sunday 2nd July:
The forecast was for cloud all day but down on the seafront early this morning the weather was glorious. Still and sunny with lots of people out early and a steady stream of visitors heading for the harbour where the Scillonian was starting its high summer Sunday sailings.

Saturday 1st July:
An evening visit to Pedn Vounder to catch the golden late light. The conditions were near perfect, just missing some clouds above Logan Rock. Enough swell coming into the bay to give some lovely lines of surf leading your eye to Logan Rock. You only get a limited amount of time in the evening as the sun drops behind the high ground to the west and the bay is soon in shadow. Still a few people down on the beach but starting to leave as the shadow crept across the sand.
