Thursday Evening:
After tea I made my way up to Bosigran, one of my favourite locations. Lovely light on the cliffs, climbers on Commando Ridge and several more on the sheer rock faces opposite. As I mentioned this morning the wind still has a real chill to it and the climbers, waiting for the leader to shout "climb when ready,"were jumping up and down and waving their arms to keep warm. As the evening wore on it got even chillier as some big clouds started rolling in from the west.

Thursday 30th June:
Up and out early on a lovely still morning. A chill in the air as summer still struggles to arrive as we go into July. Expensive looking yachts from all over Europe coming and going from the harbour this morning. One Norwegian couple planning to leave their yacht here for three weeks while they fly back to Norway and then fly back to sail over to the Scillies.

Wednesday 29th June:
A bit of a mixture today. Not sure where to go really so took two cameras, infrared and a Fuji XT-30 which I've just swapped for a lens I wasn't using. When I left home I didn't know whether to turn east or west and by taking each junction one at a time I finally ended up with the crowds at Lands End. Luckily I have my "Locals Pass" so didn't have to pay. Not sure the last time I've dared go here in summer but today was quite interesting. I walked around first with the infrared camera and then changed to the normal one. I'll put both sets of images below so you can see the difference.
After an hour or so wandering around I then went down to Sennen Beach as there was a big sea running and took another set of images here with the new camera. Some interesting light as the sun popped out now and again while out to sea there was a lot of rain passing by.
Finally I pointed the camera over towards the harbour where big swells were going up the cliff and topping the breakwater with beautiful patches of light in contrast to the rain over the sea.

Tuesday 28th June:
A lot of rain today but the forecast predicted a lovely evening and so off I went to Godrevy to photograph the glorious sunset. My first stop was the beach and sand dunes where I thought we would get some golden light on the marram grass and, for a few minutes, I did but in no time at all it went from June to November as heavy cloud and drizzle swept across from St Ives. Below you can see a set of black and whites taken as the conditions worsened, although from a photography point of view I had no complaints. Later I retreated from the rain to the car and then drove out to the lighthouse and near sunset we had a period of low sun again before that common occurrence of a curtain of cloud on the horizon snuffed out the light.

Some images from Monday where I thought colour might also suit.
Monday 27th June:
A street walk around Marazion on a grey blustery evening with a little burst of late sun. All images taken with a 70-300mm lens on a Fujifilm XT-3. I've kept some images back to edit in colour tomorrow.

Sunday 26th June:
Another day of constantly changing weather. One minute bright sunshine the next dramatic clouds and rain. In the afternoon I drove up to Botallack and then descended down the cliffs-past the yellow warning sign and down nearly to sea level. Down here I was on my own and largely out of the strong westerly wind. Having been at this very spot many times it's always hard to get a different image, you're largely relying on varied conditions. I played about with different focal lengths-10mm to 200mm- and different shutter speeds- 4 minutes to 1/4000th of a second. Mostly black and white to start with, some colour to follow.

Saturday 25th June-Evening:
Sunshine, heavy showers, big clouds the perfect recipe for the infrared camera. I set off on a photography road trip with all the photos below being taken next to the car or just a few yards away. From Penzance I drove up through Madron, along the north coast road and then turning right just after the Gurnards head Hotel returned home via Newmill. Patches of sun were racing along the moors and fields and squalls of rain racing in from the west.
There was one moment on the drive along the north coast that a rainbow appeared in front of me, so I quickly grabbed my old Fuji XE-1 and took a coloured image. It is actually a faint double rainbow if you look closely.

Sunday 25th June:
Up and out well before sunrise hoping that the rain had all gone through. Some lovely dramatic clouds moving in from the west that saw me sheltering for a while from a heavy shower. The rain was accompanied by a superb rainbow but, as often happens with rainbows, not really where you would like it to be. A busy day in Penzance today and at 5.30 in the morning the harbour was already busy with the Scillonian getting loaded with cargo and people for an early sailing. A large party of young excited children from Camborne already on the quay waiting to board the ferry for a week camping on the Isles of Scilly.

Friday Late Afternoon:
A lot of rain today but by mid afternoon it was showing signs of clearing up. I set off up to Levant for the third time this week largely because conditions were so different. As I approached the north coast, as is often the case, the weather was much more threatening with dark grey skies. The wind was really blowing from the west so I made my way down to the eastern end of the workings to find some shelter. Gradually the conditions improved and I even had a bit of sun for a while. On my way back to the car I stopped several times to try and capture the dramatic moving clouds. I had to rush the last 100 yards as the rain swept in and there was a super rainbow but not in the right place. All black and white below but probably some colour to follow.

Thursday 23rd June:
Gradually becoming cloudy as the day wore on but up at Levant this afternoon it was baking hot down on the black rocks. It was like trying to take photos standing on a night storage heater. No direct sun and hardly a breath of wind but the swell starting to pick up with some bigger waves predicted for the weekend.
So hot I had to have a pint on the way home!

Wednesday 22nd June:
Really warm today and a clear blue cloudless sky. Up at Cape Cornwall this evening the sun was blinding and the sea quite calm for the north coast. I made my way out onto the rocks to the left of the slipway so that I could shoot at right angles to the sun. I've been experimenting with a 10-24mm wide angle zoom lens and holding the camera low to the ground and water to give a different perspective.
I was even lucky enough to find a chough close to me at one point this evening. Lots of local people swimming but very few visitors around and no one at all on top of the Cape.

Tuesday 21st June:
With Alison starting to get back on her feet I felt able to venture a bit further afield this evening. I drove up to Levant and walked down through the workings and out along the coast path. I ended up clambering down onto rocks I've never been on before so it made the images just a little different. Plain blue feature less skies made me stick to black and white-the colour images look very anemic. I stopped on the coast path walking back to take images looking to the west and using the path and fence as leading lines to the workings.

Monday 20th June:
An evening walk in the sunshine around Penzance harbour and seafront. The fair is in town as we enter The Golowan Festival week and tonight the men were setting up the rides ready for the grand opening tomorrow. All sorts goes on during this week climaxing next weekend with huge parades of dressed up school children and massive moving sculptures through the town centre and then on Sunday it all moves down to the harbour and seafront. If you like crowds it's brilliant!

Sunday 19th June:
Last week was June, this weekend it's moved on to November. Yesterday was chilly with thunder and lightning, today it was positively cold with a strong north easterly wind-we even had the heating back on. Heavy rain was forecast for 3 o'clock, so at 2 o'clock I made a quick trip over to Newlyn just for some fresh air. On Friday down at Newlyn it was cloudless blue skies above a still harbour, today the sky was grey and threatening and the water brown and rippled. Strangely enough there was still a queue otside Jelbert's famous ice cream shop.

Saturday 18th June:
I had no intention of taking photographs this morning. As I often do, I went out for a brisk walk along the promenade but just in case, I put my camera bag on my back. Once down at the seafront conditions were grey but on the far side of the bay there was a lot of fog behind the Mount and it all looked quite atmospheric. Last night I had been using a 16mm prime lens so I quickly changed over to the 70-300 lens to get right in on the distant atmosphere.

Friday 17th June:
An original title for this evening's photo walk-"Newlyn Harbour 7pm." Cloudless blue skies and the beach between Penzance and Newlyn lined with families and their BBQs. Luckily for me one of the fishermen had left the security gate onto the pontoons open so I sneaked down there for an hour. Met the security guard later but he wasn't too worried.

The set of images below are entitled "Penzance Harbour 7pm" All the photos were taken on a ten year old
Fuji XE-1 but using a brand new 70-300mm lens. It's amazing how slow this little camera is by today's standards but it still produces excellent results. These images are all Fuji monochrome Jpegs straight out of camera-just a bit of straightening. Alison home from hospital but resting at home after a tough few days.

Up and out before 5am on a completely still morning. Alison is in hospital at the moment, hopefully home today. Lovely light before and at the moment of sunrise but with hardly a cloud the light soon became dazzling. Lovely to be out at this time of day, so peaceful.

Tuesday 14th June:
Not able to get out today so I've spent some time looking at the coloured images from last night and have changed my mind yet again. Still like the black and white but the coloured images have grown on me a bit. I think a lesson to be learned here is that in bright summer light very long exposures are best left black and white and of course early and late in the day is obviously better. When we got back to the car couldn't help but notice the reflections in the glass. All images last night shot on Fuji XT-3 with 18-55mm & 55-200mm

Monday Evening:
Having written this morning about the summer light, this evening was completely different. Bright and hazy to start with but a layer of broken cloud provided an hour of lovely dancing light up at Botallack. We went down onto the ledge next to the Wheal Owles shaft and memorial stone with a view right along the cliffs to the Crown's Engine Houses. We were also treated to a flock of choughs, a kestrel and a peregrine falcon who sat on a post for over an hour just along the cliff from us. Just two images to start with below-the colours are over the top for me at the moment and I prefer the black and whites. The colour image is a 4 minute exposure. More to follow tomorrow.

With daytime conditions being difficult at the moment I made the effort to be down at the harbour before sunrise today. At 5am it was still, warm and a good sunrise looked likely but by 6am it was breezy, chilly and a blanket of grey cloud. Leaky Boots was out on the pier again but this time another disabled angler was there on his mobility scooter and making a good job of fishing with only one arm.

Sunday 12th June:
We are getting to that time of year when photography can become quite difficult. The spring flowers are long over and everything is a dusty green with very bright light. This evening we had a walk around the fields above Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. It was really warm out of the wind and from here you have views down through the fields and hedges to Mounts Bay and St Michael's Mount. On the way up I used the Panasonic infrared camera and on the way down the Fuji XE-1 set to black and white. The images below are more or less straight out of camera-just fixing the horizon and getting rid of dust spots.

Saturday Evening:
We went for a walk around Bosigran this evening, very bright and hazy light and a brisk wind blowing but it was lovely and refreshing. There were a couple of climbers on Commando Ridge so I spent some time watching and taking images of them. I didn't have a really long lens with me, in fact I only had two prime lenses 23mm and 90mm. In the morning and this evening I was using my ten year old Fuji XE-1 and all handheld. Later we made our way up on to the headland with panoramic views all round.
In the past I have made some lovely silhouettes from images of climbers on the ridge. I've done one below but have a look at diary entry for 6th September 2021 for some more- this was an evening when I had a long lens with me.

Saturday 11th June:
Up and out at 5am this morning for yet another stroll along the seafront to the harbour. No matter how many times I do it something different will catch my interest. Today, apart from the lovely reflections in the still inner dock, there was local character "Leaky Boots" fishing on the pier. Leaky does a lot of work for charity and the mackerel he caught this morning I later saw for sale in the charity shop he runs in Penzance.

Later on Friday morning:
We decided that as there were some big waves forecast today we would go up to the north coast for the morning and then get pasties from St Just. We went down to Nanjulian for an hour or more and made our way up the sloping field path until we could look along the cliffs to Cape Cornwall one way and Lands End the other. The light was very blue and hazy and rather more white water than I like. The waves are much more photogenic when they are clean and holding up in an offshore wind. Shouldn't complain really as it was lovely up there. We collected the pasties and took them down Cot Valley to Porth Nanven where it was sheltered from most of the wind and really warm. The only problem here was the water was very dirty and full of weed so images from the boulder beach were out.

Up and out early for a photo walk along to the harbour. Plenty of big clouds to break up the sunshine and make the light interesting. Used the 10 year old Fuji XE-1 and 23mm prime lens. The images are in the order I took them.

Thursday Evening:
By tea time the rain had stopped and there were glimpses of sun. We drove out to Porthcurno and down onto the beach. The clouds had gone completely by the time we arrived and it was clear blue skies, not at all what we expected and too nice really. Quite a few people on the beach including Linsey, Oscar and Freddy down on holiday and enjoying the warmth in the evening sun. One group came down and the female members set about splashing about in long dresses while their partners took photos. The most difficult task this evening was keeping your shadow out of the image.

Thursday 9th June:
A grey and drizzly day with a strong south westerly blowing. As the rain was due to be heavier in the afternoon we made a morning trip up to Bosigran. Putting our wind and waterproofs on we braved it out on the high headland. At the edge of the cliff it was difficult to stand and take photos so I spent a lot of time on my knees to keep the camera steady. It was chilly and damp but really exhilarating on the edge of the cliff with the sea hundreds of feet below. Luckily the wind was blowing you inland. The views kept coming and going as the misty rain was swept along in the wind, there was even a hint of sun on the distant lighthouse just for a few seconds.
All images today taken with a ten year old Fuji XE-1 and Viltrox 23mm f1.4 lens.

Wednesday Afternoon:
After lunch we drove up to Wicca Farm near Zennor and did a walk I did a while back but this time by the reverse route. I took the infrared camera with me again as the conditions were near perfect for this type of photography. In case you don't know my camera is an eleven year old Panasonic G3 converted to capture 720nm. This means it captures light that is not visible to the human eye and blocks out light that is visible. The images below appear in the order they were taken.

Tuesday 7th June:
I very nearly didn't go out at all today as by early afternoon it was raining and seemed to be set in for the day. Late afternoon there was a dry spell so I went up to Pendeen Lighthouse got out of the car to set off for a wander before planning to go down on to the rocks to the west. Unfortunately by the time I'd taken a couple of images, within a few yards of the car, the rain was back and settled for the rest of the day.

Monday 6th June:
A very enjoyable couple of hours at Godrevy in the early evening. It was grey and overcast by then but quite calm with only a very gentle breeze. The tide was out, so I made my way out over the rocks, using the tripod early on for some exposures up to four minutes and then handheld images with the camera just above the water surface to accentuate the foreground.

Sunday June 5th:
We decided to have a morning trip out today and drove up to Cape Cornwall. It was quite grey at first but did try to brighten up at lunchtime and it certainly got really warm. Down at the slipway a couple of "cheerful" fishermen were loading crab pots onto their boats ready for the main summer season. Lots of activity to photograph. I had the camera set to show monochrome but edited the raw files in colour-at least to begin with. After a cup of tea we went for a walk along the top of Kenidjack Valley and then around and back down the road to Cape. The landscape is very green at the moment, too much so really, so I switched and edited the later images in black and white as I thought the greens were overpowering.
No tripods today, just a very pleasant walk and still quiet before more cars started arriving as we were having lunch before going home. Below you can choose which you prefer-as usual the images are in the order taken.

Saturday 4th June:
A visit to Sennen Cove on a grey and misty evening. Surprisingly quiet and empty as visitors have made their way back upcountry ready for normal life to commence. After the cloudless warm weather of the last few days it made a nice change to have some atmosphere to add to the images. Not the best conditions but I prefer it to clear blue skies.

Friday Evening:
The title of this set of images is "Backstreet Mount". These are not the photographs of St Michael's Mount you normally see on chocolate boxes or postcards.

Friday 3rd June:
A morning walk around Penzance before it gets too warm-Morrab Gardens, Chapel Street, the harbour and seafront. Ultra bright and cloudless so I used the infrared camera.

Thursday 2nd June:
Not a cloud in the sky today and far too warm and bright to be out on a photography adventure before late afternoon/evening. I drove up to St Just and took a walk down Kenidjack Valley-boy it was hot down there. Starting at "Poldark Eggs" and finishing as the stream meets the sea. Just a couple of prime lenses today with the bulk of the images taken with the Fuji 35mm and a few at the end with a Samyang 12mm as the scene opened up in front of me. Donkeys, cascades, old mine buildings and rusty machinery-always something of interest in this valley. Met a lady from St Austell on her mountain bike, camping locally and loving the scenery of the area. All the images below are Fuji Monochrome Jpegs and are displayed in the order I took them.
My back has gone at the moment so I can't sit long enough to edit the raw files!

Wednesday June 1st:
This week is Open Studios in Cornwall. Artists of all types open their studios and galleries to the public so you can buy their work but also see many of them working. This morning we set off up the St Just road and first of all stopped at the studio of painter Carys Wilson. caryswilsonstudio.com/.
When we got to St Just we stopped off to get pasties and then drove down Kenidjack Valley and up the track so that we were overlooking the Crowns Mines-what a place for lunch-sun, blue sea and sky.
After that we walked out to Kenidjack Castle to take photographs, not normally recommended in the midday sun but the colours were lovely. Had a little play with double exposures today as well. An hour or so later we drove the short distance to Tremorran and the Angel Gallery. tremorran.co.uk A beautiful place to visit, superb garden and they have accommodation if you are in the area. Here there were several artists and craftspeople showing their work including Martin Holland, a very experienced local landscape photographer. This gallery is open all year.
On a personal photography note I have now swapped systems to Fuji entirely, apart from my infrared camera. Over the last few months have really got to love the classic camera design and images my XT-3 has produced.
