Botallack-Crowns Engine Houses:
The village of Botallack is midway between St Just and Pendeen. Turn off the main road and a rough track will take you down to the National Trust car park.
Most people come to see and photograph the Crowns Engine Houses (Wheal Leisure in Poldark) but there are many other opportunities in the area.
You can go right down to the engine houses themselves, which is well worth doing but most people go down the grass bank on the other side of the little bay to the west (left).
If you are brave you can cross a narrow bridge path to the rocks and can continue down almost to sea level as the photos below show. At sea level the rocks are an intense orange caused by lichen growth. This path will be disappearing one winter soon!
If you are not able to climb down there are excellent compositions from the coastal footpath. Also if you go west to the other visible engine houses and even further to Kenidjack Castle, which is the next headland, there are more and more super images to be taken. There is no castle to be seen, just ruined mine buildings and a wartime shooting range. Great area to explore as there are super views to Cape Cornwall from this headland as well.
Botallack is also a good spot to go people watching and get images of them taking selfies, admiring the views, and taking part in art and photography workshops-some examples of that below.
